USA, Chesapeake Bay

crab (callinectes sapidus Rathbun) —
Maryland's official crustacean, and a favorite food the Chesapeake region. Male crabs are 'jimmies,' female crabs are 'sooks.' Hardshells are crabs with hardshells, softshells are crabs that have shed their shells and have not yet hardened the new shell. Peelers are crabs just about to shed their shells. Crabs can be fished for using hand lines or crab pots. Chicken necks are a favorite bait.

crab boat —

crab pot —
A trap used for catching crabs and ultimately derived from the Native American method of crabbing. Crab pots are submersed and tied together with arope and marked with small buoys. Boaters must keep an alert eye to avoid fouling their propellors with them.

crab shack —
A warm weather restaurant serving crabs and little else. A shack houses the kitchen and may have screened porches around it with picnic tables, it will also have open air tables. The tables are covered in newspaper for a tablecloth and the steamed crabs are dumped directly onto the newspaper. Crabs are broken open with wooden crab hammers and picked apart with the fingers and eaten.

crabbing —
Watermen typically spend winter oystering and summer fishing for crabs . Crabbing is also done recreationally and crab feasts on the beach are a favorite form of picnic.

In Norway last summer, having left the bus and waiting for the ferry across a splendid sunny fjord, I had leisure to look deeply into the clear waters at the landing stage.
Once my eyes had got used to the shadows, I noticed tiny blue and silver fish living their lives below, undisturbed by us and by the occasional traffic.

Tilapia from the Philippines

The tilapia is a freshwater fish that is considered to be one of the healthiest fish to eat. It has soft white meat that is not wild in taste, but delicate. And it has a lot of bones. It is usually baked and eaten with rice. It looks like a cross between a big mouth bass and a blue gill.

Hungry tilapia

Willie Bongcaron, Manila, April 2008

These fish are also found in China and Africa.

The Genus Tilapia

is endemic to warm waters throughout the world. The aquaculture, or fish farming, of Tilapia is recorded in human history as far back as ancient Egypt. Tradition holds that the Tilapia was the fish that Jesus used to feed the five-thousand on the Sea of Galilee - thus one of its common names, "St. Peter's Fish." Tilapia is also referred to as "The Wonder Fish" and "Nile Perch."

KENYA
Where Kenya is concerned, Tilapia and Nile Perch are two of the mostcommon fish, both living and fished in Lake Victoria -- and indeed, both exported to Belgium for consumption here. They are bothdelicious!

In Kenya, there would seem to be no particular season linked witheither or both of these fish, as they are available and good to eatall year round. However, they could be a non seasonal topic, sincethey play a major economic role in the lives of the people near LakeVictoria. Indeed, even those frying them in the street stalls of Nairobi, hail from Western Kenya and are "fish" people.

Isabelle Prondzynski

Tilapia in the Philippines

On January 11, 2008, the Cagayan Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) stated that tilapia production grew and Cagayan Valley is now the Philippines’ tilapia capital. Production supply grew 37.25% since 2003, with 14,000 metric tons (MT) in 2007. The recent aquaculture congress found that the growth of tilapia production was due to government interventions:
provision of fast-growing species, accreditation of private hatcheries to ensure supply of quality fingerlings, establishment of demonstration farms, providing free fingerlings to newly constructed fishponds, and the dissemination of tilapia to Nueva Vizcaya (in Diadi town).

Magnolia (mokuren)

***** Location: Japan, worldwide
***** Season: Mid-Spring
***** Category: Plant

*****************************
Explanation

Magnolia, lily magnolia (mokuren 木蓮, 木蘭) Magnolia liliflora
Literally: Tree Lotus Flower, Tree Orchid.

magnolia in full bloom

The most cultivated version in Japan. With purple blossoms.

Sarasa Mokuren (更紗木蓮)
Karasu Mokuren (烏木蓮)

Magnolia buds,
which are visible long before the fowers open, add a sence of the early spring to this flower.

magnolia in the sky

The country of origin is China, but they have been introduced to Japan in the 10th century as a garden flower to enjoy in spring. The blossom has six petals, which get as long as 10 centimeters. They all point in the same direction when open. They have a faint smell of spring. The form of the blossom resembles the lotus, hence the Japanese name, which can be written with the Chinese charactersfor lotus 蓮 or orchid 蘭.

The fallen petals create a violet carpet and evoke the feeling of sadness and passing on of life, some sort of "mono no aware".

The white magnolia, which flowers earlier, found its way to Europe in the 18th/19th century and became very popular soon. Magnolia is the English version of the word "mokuren" .

http://www010.upp.so-net.ne.jp/pha/flo0405hounoki.htm

This beautiful flower on its large leaves is a pleasure to find in any forest. Since the flowers sit on the large leaves, they are hard to detect and better viewed from far first. The contrast of the white flowers with the dark green leaves is splendid. The small petals in the center of the flower are also worth a second look.

It has a lovely smell and the leaves are used for fragrant teas and even bean paste (miso). The name HOO derives from "fragrance" 包.

The tree has a slightly white bark. The wood is soft and easy to process, it is used for wooden clogs Geta 下駄 and piano parts.
