The area of origin is Asia Minor, but now they are grown worldwide. In the 16. century they came to Europe via Turkey and caused quite a stirr.
When the Austrian Ambassador to Turkey saw the first tulips there, he asked his translator for the name of this flower. "They are called like the cloth the turks wear around their head, a turban (tulipan). "

Alexandre Dumas even wrote a novel called the Black Tulip (see below).
Tulips were introduced to Japan during the late Edo period and became widespread during the Meiji period. Now they are grown mostly in the provinces of Niigata and Toyama.
In Europe, best known is maybe Holland for its tulip fields.

The stem is usually tall and the flower has six petals, three inner ones and three outer ones called "sepal". There are now many varieties in many colors.
For a haiku, you can talk about the flowers in a park, garden or pot on your veranda. They are usually quite bright without any shadow.

Tiles of carnelian, lapis, and jade,
The muralist sees his picture
One centimeter at a time.
Every piece alone is precious;
Together they make a priceless whole.
